This privately held mutual firm has a primary focus on serving people in small towns and rural communities. Headquartered in Yoakum, Texas, Hochheim Prairie Insurance sells its policies through independent agencies in small Texas towns.
You won’t find a Hochheim agent in bigger cities, but they’re easily found in the German neighborhoods between San Antonio and Houston as well as small southern towns like Alice.
Hochheim Prairie sells insurance for personal vehicles, including cars, trucks, and RVs. You can purchase a liability-only policy or add coverages like collision, personal injury protection and comprehensive (coverage protecting against non-collision losses, like hail or vandalism). All policy limits and deductibles can be customized to meet your budget: Higher liability limits and low deductibles will result in better coverage but higher prices.
Aside from modifying your coverages, you can save some money on a Hochheim policy by taking advantage of one or more of its offered discounts:
- 10% discount for a policy that’s been claim-free for 36 months
- 10% discount to a policyholder who has taken a defensive driving course
- 20% discount to drivers who also insure their homes or who have multiple vehicles on the policy
The company also offers discounts for vehicle safety features such as anti-theft devices and airbags.
Hochheim sells insurance for homes and personal property. Several types of buildings can be insured through the company:
- Single-family homes
- Mobile and modular homes
- Multi-family housing, such as duplexes
It also offers builder’s risk insurance, which protects a person who is building or renovating his home. In the event that a covered loss destroys or damages the home-in-progress, this risk insurance will help offset the costs of the loss.
It’s important to note that, unlike many other companies, standard homeowners policies do not cover liability insurance for homeowners. You have to buy liability coverage separately.
If you live on a small farm and have related structures and equipment, including barns, tractors, irrigation equipment and fences, you’ll want to buy additional “farm and ranch building” coverage for these structures.
Homeowners can enjoy a handful of discounts to help offset the costs of their premiums:
- Bundled policy discount for people who also insure their vehicles.
- Discount for metal and other types of hail-resistant roots.
- New home discount for structures three years old or less, with lesser discounts for slightly older homes up to 12 years.
- Discount for the installation of a home security system.
Hochheim offers coverage for several types of small businesses, including commercial farms and ranches. Different types of businesses have separate bundled policies offering general coverages needed by that type of company:
- Professional offices
- Retail businesses
- Service businesses
- Bed and breakfasts
- Apartments and other rental properties
Coverage generally protects against specific types of liability as well as general commercial property.
The farm and ranch insurance is designed specifically with agribusiness in mind, offering protection for farm structures as well as tools, machinery, hay, seed, and fertilizer.
Hochheim’s website does allow for an online quote, however, this is only available for home insurance. The site also allows the user to enter their zip code where it will then direct you to a local agent. An auto insurance quote would have to be obtained by contacting a local agent.
The Hochheim website recommends that policyholders file claims through their insurance agents when possible. For emergencies or when the agent is unavailable, the number 1-888-473-6256 is offered.
There is not an online claims form available, however, the “Claims” section of the website does have some useful information about what to do after an accident and how to prepare for a weather disaster.
Hochheim Prairie Insurance is a small company with a tight niche, making consumer reviews hard to track down. Although the company is not accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) website, it does have an A+ rating. There are no complaints listed, and one positive review posted. On Facebook, the company has over 300 “likes” however, is not very active as their latest post was in 2014.

Hochheim has a tight focus, and it’s possible that you may not live in an area covered by the company. If you do live in a rural community serviced by the company, it may be worth finding an agent and discussing your options. The one glaring issue that pulls their overall score down is their financial strength rating with S&P. A B- is extremely low compared to most other companies we have reviewed.
