Today, Lancer’s primary focus is still on mass transportation of all kinds, including tour buses, charter buses, and school buses. It also insures more specialized products like limousine fleets and rental vehicles. In 1998, the company started insured long-haul trucking fleets through its Owner Operator Direct branch, allowing truckers who own or lease their rigs to acquire insurance for the vehicle.
The company has become well-known for its reputation for commercial and mass transit vehicle insurance, and it’s one of the biggest and most well-known companies within that niche.
Right now, Lancer does not insure private automobiles, and there are no immediate plans to add this product to the company’s roster.
Lancer sells a number of different policies for various types of commercial and fleet vehicles.
Any company that offers rental or loaner vehicles will need to insure the fleet, particularly since the insurance of the renter will not always cover the vehicle. Lancer offers coverage for these types of cars, including collision, comprehensive, injury protection, and liability.
Auto rental policies also come with general liability insurance for the business, which is a helpful added perk. This type of liability protects the business owners from injuries sustained on the premises, including office areas and parking lots.
Businesses of all kinds that utilize commercial vehicles can insure those vehicles through Lancer:
- Box trucks and delivery vans
- Tow trucks and service vehicles
- Commercial garages and tow yards
- Driving schools for commercial vehicles
Aside from damage and liability coverage for the vehicles themselves, Lancer’s commercial auto insurance can also offer some general liability protection to the business itself for its premises. These policies are available in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, and Connecticut only.
Limousines of all kinds, including stretch SUVs and buses, can be insured through Lancer. These policies include physical damage and bodily injury liability as well as first-party damage coverage like collision and comprehensive.
Since limousines are generally a high-class mode of transportation, policies come with very high liability limits — you can get up to $5 million per incident in liability for injuries and damages.
Like Lancer’s other forms of commercial auto insurance, these policies can come with general liability for your business as well as garage liability for the premises where the fleet is stored.
Lancer handles its long-haul trucking insurance through its subsidiary, Owner Operator Direct, as well as its own Lancer brand. Regardless of which branch of the company provides the coverage, long-haul trucking insurance is designed to meet the needs of commercial truckers who travel cross-country to deliver goods.
Aside from physical damage, property damage liability and bodily injury liability coverages, the long-haul trucking insurance also insures the cargo that is being hauled.
Lancer Insurance is known first and foremost as a bus insurer, and these policies make up the bulk of the company’s business. It is the largest bus insurer in the country.
Multiple types of buses are insured by Lancer:
- School buses
- Luxury motor-coaches
- Tour buses
- Intercity and transit buses
As with all Lancer policies, bus insurance protects the bus itself as well as bodily injury and property damage liability for accidents it may cause.
Other types of policies, like the vanpool or KidsKab plans, offer similar protection for different specialty vehicles and businesses.
Although Lancer offers some basic commercial liability coverage with all of its plans, you can also purchase a more thorough property and liability plan through the company. These policies are available to all sorts of business owners, not just those who maintain vehicle-related businesses.
These commercial property policies provide coverage for your physical property, including office spaces and equipment. They also provide general business liability, which covers both against accidental injury and negligence as related to your business.
Lancer provides liability and commercial auto coverage for explosives companies, including blasting contractors and demolition outfits. These policies are sold through the subsidiary Nobel Insurance Services.
You can obtain a quote by calling the appropriate department directly or submitting a contact request through the Lancer website. Since different departments all have their own phone numbers, your best bet is to go to the “Contact Us” page and choose the correct department from there.
Note that the form you’re taken to when you click “Get a Quote” is not actually a quote request form per se — you won’t get a price immediately and it won’t ask you any specific questions about your intended policy. It is simply a contact form meant to provide some basic information to Lancer so that the right kind of associate will call back to discuss your needs.
In general, premiums can vary quite a bit since Lancer policies are geared toward commercial clients, and different businesses may have very different needs. The type of policy and size of the fleet being insured will be the two biggest factors in cost, but the type of coverages you buy and the amount of your deductible will also change the final cost of the policy.
Claims can be filed 24/7 by calling the appropriate claims line. You can find the appropriate number for the specific department you are seeking by clicking “Claims Center” from the main page of the Lancer website.
Lancer is not accredited by the Better Business Bureau, however they currently have an A- rating. There is only one complaint lodged against the company, and Lancer’s failure to respond to it has resulted in the A- rating.
Since Lancer is a “business-to-business” company, rather than one that sells directly to individual consumers, it’s difficult to find too many customer reviews and complaints. It does have a few negative Yelp reviews, all of them from claimants filing claims against Lancer customers — these reviews all cite poor customer service.

Lancer is a “business-to-business” company, and it handles itself like one. Lancer is a top business in its tight niche, and it offers good protection within that niche. If you have a bus or other commercial fleet vehicle to insure, Lancer is definitely worth a look.
