Plymouth Rock Assurance Summary
Founded in 1982 by former Massachusetts insurance commissioner Jim Stone, Plymouth Rock Assurance Corporation was the first of what would become a group of insurance companies serving several states. The Plymouth Rock Group of companies now includes, in addition to PLAC, the following companies:
- Bunker Hill Insurance Company
- Pilgrim Insurance Company
- Mt. Washington Assurance Corporation
- Plymouth Rock Management Company
Plymouth Rock Assurance Corporation writes policies in Massachusetts and Connecticut. Their headquarters is in Boston, MA. Other companies in the group cover New Jersey and New Hampshire.
Policies are written through a network of independent agents, but quoting and direct purchase of policies through the company’s website is also an option.
Policies for auto insurance are available in both Connecticut and Massachusetts and provide all of the legally required coverage as well as a list of common options to create a comprehensive policy.
Massachusetts Car Insurance
Massachusetts drivers have the choice of two package policy levels: standard and premium.
Standard policies are designed to be budget friendly and include replacement cost for vehicles with less than 15,000 miles, along with several options that can be added including towing and labor coverage, increased liability, low-cost deductibles and rental car coverage.
Premium policies come with an increased cost and several added features:
- Deductible Dollars, a program that helps cover the cost of your deductible after a claim
- Accidental discharge of airbags coverage
- Waiver of depreciation to reduce the cost of repair or replacement parts for older vehicles after a covered loss
- Added towing and labor coverage
Both the standard and premium packages have the option to add Accident Forgiveness, which allows the driver to have one covered accident with no increase in premiums.
Plymouth Rock Rewards is available to Massachusetts customers, which includes a discount card for auto-related services, easy account access and personal assistance, and the unusual “Get Home Safe” option which will pay up to $50 in taxi fare. Drivers can choose to upgrade to the Plus program offering even more features for a fee.
Connecticut Car Insurance
Coverage options for drivers in Connecticut are different, with no variations in package levels. Liability and common options are available for drivers to choose their levels and options and create a package policy.
Currently there is no rewards program for Connecticut drivers and there are no optional add-ons such as Accident Forgiveness available.
Both states offer individual and group discounts on their policies, including homeowner discounts, good student, and safe driver discounts as well.
Commercial Auto Insurance
Plymouth Rock writes commercial auto insurance policies for a variety of different businesses in both Connecticut and Massachusetts. There are a variety of coverage levels and options for fleets of varying sizes, and discounts such as, Safe Driver Discount, and Companion Discount, are also available.
Homeowner’s insurance policies are written through Bunker Hill Insurance, another Plymouth Rock Group company. Auto/home discounts are available to those who carry Plymouth Rock auto insurance and Bunker Hill home insurance.
All insurance quoting and information is found on the Bunker Hill website, and zero policies are sold directly through Plymouth Rock Assurance.
Plymouth Rock offers an online quoting system that is rather complicated and involved, but promises to offer comparison rates at the end. Quotes are only available by entering detailed information, but this is likely to result in more accurate results.
The website promises savings of more than $400 on average, but as with most such claims it applies only to those who did switch; those who didn’t may have found the rates less appealing. Comments from insured parties on review sites seem to bear out good savings on premiums.
Plymouth Rock has a strong list of discounts, which are likely to make rates more affordable, and although they are a smaller insurance company compared to national insurers, the ability to combine with Bunker Hill homeowner’s insurance for a discount will also make a difference. Still, smaller insurance companies, especially those selling through agents, tend to have higher rates than the big companies simply due to volume.
The Plymouth Rock claims section of the website offers a lot of information about the claims process and how to report one. Claims can be reported 24 hours a day, seven days a week via the claims center phone number.
Plymouth Rock offers some unique claims services:
- Crashbusters, an on-site mobile adjuster service that sends an adjuster out to the accident scene, your home, or any other location to assess the damage and in some cases even issue a check immediately.
- Door-to-Door Valet Service, a claims handling program that is much like concierge service, handling all of the details of your car repairs.
Claims can be followed through the eServices program, a customer portal where account details can be access. Claim status is available through this system.
Although not accredited, Plymouth Rock Assurance has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. There are a total of 17 complaints with the BBB in the past three years, ten of which were closed in the last 12 months. Those numbers are quite low for a relatively large regional insurer, particularly an auto insurer.
|Rating Company||Grade||Financial Outlook|
Plymouth Rock Assurance has a strong auto insurance program, especially in Massachusetts, offering a range of options, add-ons, and discounts. They also allow bundling to save money thanks to the connection with Bunker Hill. The claims system is well thought out and offers options not available elsewhere. Although there are some complaints out there, overall Plymouth Rock has a good reputation and are well worth a quote comparison, particularly for Massachusetts residents who have access to the most options, discounts, and programs.
