Rockingham Home Mutual Fire Insurance was founded in 1869 in Port Republic, Virginia. A few years later, in 1872, West Rockingham Mutual was formed; the two would combine a little less than a hundred years later, in 1968, to form Rockingham Mutual Insurance. The years that followed saw a long list of mergers with Virginia mutual companies.
In 2000, the company expanded into Pennsylvania under the name Rockingham Casualty Company. The formation of Rockingham Specialty in 2012 completed the group of companies as it appears today.
Rockingham offers home insurance, auto insurance, farm, business, and more insurance through independent agents across the two states they serve. According to the website, they have more than 50,000 policies in force.
Rockingham offers a basic line of personal products, including auto and home, as well as business and farm insurance and a line of specialty products.
Rockingham offers a pretty comprehensive auto insurance program for a smaller insurance company. In addition to the standard liability coverage and the usual basic options, Rockingham offers some options usually only seen at larger companies.
These include accident forgiveness and the Smart Wheel Drive program, a telemetrics program that allows drivers to earn discounts based on the information returned by the system about their driving habits.
The Roadside Assistance Plus add-on option covers all vehicles on the policy nationwide for a flat annual fee of $15. They also have Plus One Replacement, which is essentially a new car replacement option that covers certain model years for replacement cost new rather than depreciated value.
There is a solid list of available discounts as well, some common and some less so. This includes a new family discount, loyalty discount, and accident prevention discount.
Rockingham offers traditional home insurance as well as coverage for mobile homes and for rental homes.
The standard home policy is customizable, allowing the addition of a number of options to enhance the basic structure, personal property, and liability coverage.
Options include Equipment Breakdown, Identity Theft, increased replacement cost coverage, water and sewer backup, and more.
There are also several discounts offered for home insurance, including multi-policy and a new mortgage discount.
Rockingham offers policies for full-time family farms as well as hobby farms. They cover a variety of farming operations, with standard and customized coverage to fit the needs of every farmer.
Among the available options are equipment breakdown, identity theft coverage, and even an add-on specifically for loss of income due to avian flu.
There is little information on the business insurance side of Rockingham, but they appear to offer standard commercial package policies, with several add-ons available to customize the package.
These include specific types of liability, and the Choice Enhancement Endorsement, which is an additional package of extra coverage.
Through Rockingham Specialty, a branch of the main company, specialty products are available in two main categories. These are niche commercial insurance and coastal property coverage.
The specialty areas of commercial insurance include artisan contractors, while the coastal property coverage is designed for the unique needs of properties on the Eastern Seaboard, where insurance can be difficult to obtain.
Rockingham has an online quoting system that requires a lot of personal information, which some people may prefer not to enter online.
We ran a quote based on our standard sample information, but we ran only one driver and car in order to compare as closely as possible to published average rates for the state of Virginia. We returned a rate of $74.48 a month, which is below the state average of $93.
It is surprising to see online quotes from a company like Rockingham that works through local agents. The final step of the quote likely re-directs to an agent to finalize the policy.
Being a smaller, agent-driven company, we would not expect Rockingham’s rates to be among the lowest out there, but Rockingham’s rates actually come in well below state average – and that’s without any multi-policy or other discounts.
Rockingham claims can be filed online with an easy to access form. This is nice to see for a smaller, regional company.
There is also a toll-free number, which the website recommends using in the event of a serious incident, such as a fire or an accident involved serious injuries.
The website promises a response to claims filed online by a representative within 24 hours.
Ratings and Consumer Reviews
Rockingham’s Better Business Bureau (BBB) page appears under Rockingham Mutual Group, Inc., which covers all of the underlying companies. The current rating is an A+ with only two complaints on file in the past three years. None of those were closed in the past 12 months.
Outside of this, we were unable to find much in the way of reviews for this company. That is pretty common for a small, regional insurer.
The Bottom Line
Rockingham has been around a long time, offers solid products, and has reasonable rates. For those who prefer a smaller company with local roots and are ok with having an agent versus handling their insurance on a direct-buy basis, they are a good choice.
