United Teacher and Associates, based in Austin, Texas, is part of the Great American Supplemental Benefits Group.
Although its primary market is individuals, United Teacher Associates also offers group accident and health supplemental insurance as well as annuities.
The company focuses on three areas of supplemental health insurance: cancer, heart disease, and accidents. Supplemental insurance typically helps pay for deductibles and coinsurance, but can also help cover other costs such as lost wages, additional pharmaceutical costs, and other expenses.
- Cancer Insurance—a lump sum benefit from $10,000 to $50,000 on the first diagnosis of internal cancer or malignant melanoma. With a Cancer Treatment Benefit Policy, customers are given a variety of payments directly when undergoing treatment. It covers such items as hospital confinement, inpatient drugs and medicines, second and third options, private duty nursing, experimental treatment, extended care facility, bone marrow transplant and more.
- Heart Insurance—UTA offers two policies. One is for first diagnosis of heart attack and first major heart surgery. Similar to the first diagnosis for cancer, it provides a lump sum benefit from $10,000 to $50,000. The second is a hospital income policy in the event of heart disease, heart attack, or stroke. It also pays directly to the insured to cover a wide variety of expenses, including such things as at-home nursing, second and third options, ambulance, transportation and lodging, and a variety of medical expenses.
- Accident Insurance—this policy provides limited benefits for ambulance, medical expenses, initial hospitalization and confinement, dismemberment, physical therapy and prosthetics, intensive care, accidental death, and family lodging and transportation.
UTA policies are guaranteed renewable (although the company has the right to increase premium on a class basis), and rates do not increase as you age. Coverage’s are available for individuals, single parents, or families. On individual (rather than group) policies, coverage is continuous even if the customer changes jobs or retires.
UTA agents also have access to limited life and annuity products underwritten by other members of the Great American Supplemental Benefits Group.
United Teacher Associates Insurance Company prices are comparable to similar companies such as AFLAC, the best known of the supplemental health insurance providers.

United Teacher Associates Insurance Company appears to be an OK provider for supplemental and specialty insurance products. While the topic of specialty insurance is hotly debated, if you do decide to go that route, UTA is worth comparing. They have a very good rating from the NAICC, but their financial strength is questionable by insurance company standards.
