Titan Insurance competes in the non-standard car insurance market, providing coverage primarily for high-risk drivers and those requiring an SR-22 form. They are a part of the Nationwide Insurance brand, and have recently entered the smartphone app market.
Android—The Android version needs only Android 2.1 or better, so it is available for many of the older Android devices.
Apple—The same low operating system requirement allowing older equipment applies to Apple products with only iOS 4.3 or later.
Titan has chosen to include the best of its competitors features:
- Make a payment.
- View basic account information.
- View an electronic insurance ID card
- Report a claim
- Find an agent
- “Contact us” via phone to get a quote or assistance.
The interface for making payments is straightforward and easy to use, but apparently prone to call dropping. It’s hard to determine from user comments whether the dropping is a problem with the app or with the phone service.
The account information that can be viewed is also limited, and is essentially what is found on the electronic ID cards. Electronic ID cards, however, are not legal proof of insurance in all states, and Titan could do a better job of educating its users to that fact.
What it can’t do:
This basic app has left off several functions its competitors feature:
- No roadside assistance information
- No claim information retention.
- No claim support functions, such as uploading photos of a situation.
- No direct ability to contact an assigned claims representative.
These are features that competitors have already incorporated into their mobile apps. There appears to be no particular technical reason not to include these functions, although in fairness, the competitors’ apps require a newer operating system.
Many of the assistance functions, such as getting a quote or making a claim, are simple phone procedures that can be done without the app.
As far as can be determined, this app will not shorten the process for making a claim. It’s only claim function is to call the Titan claim desk. Hopefully future versions will add more functionality to the claim service.
Google Play / iTunes Reviews
On Google Play the app has been rated 3.7 stars based on 93 reviews. Many of the negative reviews, however, seem to refer more to the users’ inability to understand their device than any actual failing of the app.
iTunes has not received enough ratings for the app to display an average.
On the whole, the functions of this app are fairly reliable and easy to use, but the actual usefulness of the app is limited. Many of its functions—reporting a claim, contacting your agent—could be done as easily with a listing in your contact database. If electronic ID cards are legal proof of insurance in your state then we would recommend the app. Otherwise, you might want to wait until it has more functionality before spending storage space to download.
